In 2018, the popular love ballad Girl with Braids, sung by Chongqing singer Hu Haijian, is about a young man who falls in love at first sight with a girl with braids in Ciqikou ancient town of Chongqing but ends up with the frustration of unrequited love.
2018年，著名重庆歌手胡海舰推出一首歌曲《麻花姑娘》，并收录于其后来发行的专辑《重庆姑娘》里。《麻花姑娘》讲述的是一个青年男子对重庆磁器口一位美丽的“扎着麻花辫”的姑娘一见钟情，却又求而不得的故事。

The song soon became a hit, and the ancient town and heroine went viral online. More dramatic still, the song also turned the spotlight on the lyricist Zhou Liangguo, a truck driver with 21 years on the job, adding literary light on his seemingly humble life.
一经发表，不少网友表示，每个男人心中都应该有个“麻花姑娘”，并表示要到西南古镇磁器口看看麻花姑娘的模样。当大家在对麻花姑娘好奇的同时，这首歌的第一作者周良国，今年58岁，当了21年货车司机，他看似平凡的岁月中，散发着文学光辉。
Born in Yongjia town in Chongqing's Tongliang district in 1963, Zhou was a fan of literature as a child.
周良国1963年出生于重庆市铜梁区永嘉镇，他从小喜欢读书，尤其爱好文学。

After his graduation from high school, Zhou spent four years as a farmer and then moved to the city to make a living. He served as a porter, a plumber and electrician in Chongqing and as a sailor in Guangzhou. In the meantime, he signed up for a one-year correspondence course for creative writing in Chongqing and completed the course at age 24.
高中毕业后，他在农村呆了4年，后来到重庆当过搬运工，到广州当过水手，1993年起在重庆当了5年多的水电工。工作期间，他在重庆报了一个为期一年的文学创作函授课程，并于24岁顺利结业。
With a daughter to raise and parents to look after, Zhou and his wife sold their house to buy a truck in 1998, and Zhou became a truck driver hauling general merchandise and construction steel from one district to another in Chongqing.
有一个女儿和四个老人要照顾，周良国和妻子在1998年卖掉了家里唯一的房子，花8万元购买了一辆卡车并挂靠于沙坪坝一家公司。周良国从此跑起了货运，主要拉百货和建筑钢材。
"A truck driver doesn't work and rest regularly. You have to be on call at anytime," Zhou said.
“当司机没有规律作息，你得随传随到。”周良国说。
Still, he didn't give up his literary pursuits.
即便如此，周良国也没有放弃他的文学追求。
In July 2015, Zhou came across a book — A Brief Introduction to Lyrics Writing — during a work break. Inspired by the book, which he treasured and annotated on many pages, he tried writing lyrics and found pleasure in his tough life.
2015年7月，货运间隙，周良国偶然淘得一本《写词攻略》单行本。他如获至宝，书上记满了密密麻麻的笔记，并开始自学歌词写作，在艰辛的拉货岁月里苦中作乐。

A truck driver lyricist? At the beginning, Zhou was mocked by other drivers, most of whom spent their spare time drinking, playing cards or watching movies. "They thought it was impossible, but I decided to be a different kind of truck driver," he said.
身边大多数工友的业余生活是喝酒、打牌、看电影。开始时，很多工友对他写歌也觉得“不可能”，还带着讽刺和调侃的口吻，觉得拉货的“作词家”是个笑话，但他却觉得自己就要当个与众不同的货车司机。
During breaks in loading and unloading, Zhou would sit in the cab reading or writing. He has a large collection of literary works, from short essays to long novels by multiple Chinese literary greats. He has built a thick pile of manuscripts over the years.
一直以来，爱好文学的周良国都喜欢看书，杨朔、冰心的散文，路遥的《平凡的世界》。当客户上下货的空闲时间时，他都坐在驾驶室里看书，写的歌词底稿也已经是厚厚一大叠。
"I have no other thought than this," Zhou said.
“从小偏科语文的我，只有这一门心思。”他说。

Over the years starting in 2015, Zhou has written more than 300 lyrics and had nearly 300 published, more than 100 composed and produced and some spread on the internet. His works covers a wide range of issues about love, family, life and thoughts and feelings that occur to him.
从那时起， 周良国先后在《词刊》《花港词刊》《新诗歌》《重庆艺术》《重庆音乐》《香港音乐文学报》《金沙文化》《中国词林歌海》《东方音乐文学》《歌词工厂》等书微刊上，创作歌词300余首、发表近300首、谱曲制作100余首及部分网络流转的歌词，内容涵盖了爱情、亲情、人间百态、人生哲理。
At the beginning, Zhou sent samples to various platforms, but there was no response.
周良国先后在各大平台投稿，但都没有回音。
In May 2017, two of Zhou's lyrics were published by Ci Kan, a national monthly journal of music literature.
2017年5月，周良国的两首歌词被《词刊》发表，这令他非常高兴。《词刊》是我国唯一的一家向国内外公开发行的音乐文学（月刊）刊物。
The same year, Liu Chuanyu, deputy director of the Chongqing Pop Music Association, became the first person to compose music for Zhou's lyrics for The Mad Mother and subsequently guided Zhou into music circles.
同年，重庆流行音乐协会副主席、跨界音乐人刘川郁，第一次将周良国的《疯娘》弹唱出来并让周良国在圈内打开局面。
In 2017 alone, Zhou finished more than 80 songs.
受到鼓舞的周良国在创作高峰期的2017年，写了八十多首歌。
"This is unbelievable, even for professional lyricists," Liu said.
“这对专业写作者也是很难的。”刘川郁说。
"Anyone can write songs," he said, adding that the big contrast between his occupation and his talent is welcomed by pop music, which is also noted for its diversity.
“每个人都可以写歌。他这种（卡车司机和作词人的）反差，与流行音乐不谋而合，因为流行音乐本身就是多元化的。”刘川郁说。

"Art comes from life. It is Zhou's truck driver's experience that gives him unique perspectives," Liu said. "Simple and hardworking as he is, he has achieved really solid work."
“正是他的经历给了他独特的视角，艺术来源于生活。”他说。“周国良朴实、努力，写出的作品很扎实。”
Liu is working on a fifth song in collaboration with Zhou.
刘川郁与周良国合作的第五首歌正在制作中。
"I think writing a song is more difficult than writing a poem," Zhou said. "You have to bear in mind the tone patterns, to make a clear story within the condensed verses with simple words, to be acknowledged by ordinary people and to arouse their interest to sing on the lips."
“我认为写歌词比写诗更难，你要讲求平仄、意境，在短短的一首歌里做到凝练而不晦涩地讲清楚一件事，被大众所接受并乐意传唱。”他说。
After graduation from high school, Zhou spent four years as a farmer before moving to the city to make a living. Zhou said he has written many songs for companies, organizations and schools, with one of the best-known, Kiss My Younger Brother Friar Sand, which alludes to the hardships of truck drivers.
周良国说，他也为许多企业、机关单位、学校写歌。其中，最广为人知的一首《亲亲我的沙师弟》，隐射了货车司机人群的生活百态。
He said he has earned little from writing over the years. "But I'll carry on with writing lyrics, which is the ultimate joy to me." He hopes to produce more widely sung lyrics in the future.
周良国说多年来他写歌赚的并不多。“但我会继续写歌，这是于我而言最滋养人、最高级的享受。”他表示，希望在未来能写出被更多人传唱的歌词。 |
