  Clark Blaise:
  Workshop Title:
The North American Style in Short Story Writing
(This is purely deive, not proive)
Every culture has its own imperatives, its "sense of self" and ways of creating believable characters, incorporating drama, conflict, interiority, guilt, pride, the use of the past What constitute "resolution" in the American story? What is the role of society, religion, politics, history? What about humor or satire? Who is the imagined audience—does the writer serve the audience or him/herself?
  Robert Olen Butler:
  Workshop Title:
  Creating Fictional Art
The workshop will focus on the fundamentals of the creative process for any fiction writers, beginning or advanced who aspire to create enduring literature. We will address such issues as what is art; what is distinctive about the way the artist addresses the world, the inner self, and the objects to be created; and what are the essential characteristics of fiction as an art form. Perhaps most importantly, how do I maintain creative control of the story writing process .
  Gish Jen:
  Workshop Deion:
Where to Start? From ABC to DEF
This is a basic workshop. We will talk about how to generate story ideas and how to identify which among them has promise. From there we will discuss what basic story structure looks like. All levels welcome.
  Licia Canton:
  Workshop Title:
Writing the Story: From First Draft to Final Version
Do you have a story to tell? Is a story worthy of being written? How do you transition from a story idea to a first draft and final version? We will discuss the elements of the well-written short story, and how to transition from the beginning to the end of the story. We will look at ways of perfecting the story and steps to follow once a final version has been completed. Is it polished enough to send off?
  TIME:2:00 pm - 5:00 pm, July 12Bharati Mukherjee:
  Workshop title:
Distinguishing Voice From Gaze in Your Short Stories:
  The Author-Narrator Two-Step
This is a workshop on the importance and consequences of point-of-view (POV) choices. What’s the story you want to tell? Which of your characters is best suited to tell it? The events in the story will be viewed through the eyes of the POV character, and additionally, will be judged by the voice of the author. How much distance do you want to maintain between you as author and you as the imaginary POV character? How do you distinguish your POV character’s ‘take’ on the story’s events from your authorial perspective on them? Participants are encouraged to bring “flash fiction” (i.e. a 2-4-page double-spaced story) or an excerpt of a longer story that they have written for workshop discussion.
  Li Yiyun:
  Workshop Title:
Rx for a Story Worth the Telling
In this workshop, Yiyun Li borrows a title from an essay by Elizabeth Bowen to discuss the essential nature of storytelling. Stories are like people—they exist with or without writers, but is every story worth telling? Li will consider that question by looking to examples from stories by established writers as well as students' work.
  Nuala Ni Chonchuir:
  Workshop Title:
From End to End – What is Important in Short Stories?
This workshop will zone in on the important elements in short fiction writing; using quotes, exercises and examples. I will show participants how to be mindful in their writing, from start to finish. We will look at early decisions in story writing: the importance of a strong title and a good opening. We will also explore appropriate language use, story/plot and the creation of believable dialogue. We will examine character under the following headings: motivation; conflict; profiles; naming. Participants will receive a handout.
  Tracey Slaughter:
This workshop will concentrate on issues of ‘ending’ and ‘opening’ in the short story form, from finding the first seed of the story to setting down the final crucial word. Looking at specific examples, as well as exploring their own work, participants will examine how questions of opening and closing intensify and deepen the story, reflecting on where to cut into the action, where to ‘open-out’ from a single image, and where to cut away from scene into white space.
